Meditation Matters | Review

Updated: Dec 29, 2019

Meditation is the key to personal least in my book.

Even though I'm a novice--a beginner really--I can see the impact meditation is already having in my life. One of the biggest challenges I had, and one of the most common ones, is how much the mind races and wanders, especially when you are just starting your journey into meditation. To help with that, I began exploring various meditation apps and resources.

In this Meditation Matters, I'll share with you my impressions on the Oprah & Deepak 21-Day Meditation Experience App.

Oprah and Deepak are undoubtedly two of my favorite authors and aware souls of our time. I'm a huge fan of both and am currently listening to Oprah's, The Path Made Clear: Discovering Your Life's Direction and Purpose on Audible. I've read many of Deepak's books as well so I was excited to discover their collaboration on a meditation app.

The app offers three types of programs, a Meditation Experience, an Online Program, and Mantras & Music.

The Meditation Experience offers an excellent and broad array of downloadable meditation programs addressing many areas, from Manifesting Grace through Gratitude, to Shedding the Weight: Mind, Body, & Spirit, to Creating Abundance. The offerings here are almost all co-branded with Deepak and Oprah on the cover which I assume means, they collaborated in the development and/or production.

Prices start at $39.99 for the Creating Abundance album and then you have album options for $49.99 and $69.99 for the extended versions. Several of the meditations come in a Special Extended Edition although it wasn't exactly clear what made them extended versions since they all had the same number of days in the meditation--22. Also unclear was why it is called the 21-Day Challenge when they offer 22 days of meditations.

I had already participated in the free Creating Abundance Meditation Experience--an opportunity for people to listen to a limited series of meditations for free for five days from the post date. Having already started that program, I purchased the album.

The quality of the production is top-notch, rich audio, and great music. I was surprised that it wasn't a guided meditation, however. We hear Deepak begin the meditation with a phrase, repeat it three times, a bell sounds, and then there is music for approximately 14 minutes or so and then the bell rings again, and he repeats the same phrase again.

Had this been the format used by anyone else, I don't believe many people would pay the steep price for the meditations. If you are seeking a guided meditation, this is not that. If you want a simple format with mostly music, and yes, Deepak's voice, this is that. I personally will not purchase another program using this format. It just isn't worth the price. That being said, now that I've purchased it, it is one of my go-to meditations. However, there are other meditation programs that offer more for less. I would love to see the Deepak & Oprah app offer a subscription model that allows users access to all of the meditations for a straightforward monthly fee.

Note that the Creating Abundance album is listed in the Mantras & Music section. Which may explain why it is only mantras and music, but you don't see it identified as that in the Meditation Experience section. I did not purchase other albums, an we don't have the opportunity to preview the albums, so I don't know if the other albums are only

It would also be helpful to allow people a preview of the meditation. It would be helpful if they offered previews of the albums on the app itself.

The Online Program offers a much smaller selection of meditations on topics such as Breathwork, Restful Sleep, and Finding Your Center. Prices in this array are much more reasonable and are full courses. Unlike the Meditation Experience albums, these courses come with detailed explanations, access to online content, materials, and resources.

For those seeking value, and focused introductory content, these are a good choice to get you started on your meditation journey.

The Mantras & Music section brings back Oprah and currently has only three albums available for download. The topics are Miraculous Relationships, Perfect Health, and Creating Abundance.
